Today, the children helped to maintain the current garden beds and add more seasonal plants. The children worked hard to clear the beds of weeds, plant different bulbs and finally water the plants. The children have shown how they are responsible stewards and care for the world around them.

Year 1 have been working very hard on their own Lost and Found stories. They were very proud of their stories so took them up to Year 6 to share their fabulous writing. The Year 6's were very impressed.

The children developed their classification skills by grouping newly discovered species. The children researched the anatomy of the species and generated enquiry questions to organise the different animals. Using this research, the children created a classification key.

The children organised different sentences under the correct heading. The children focused on the simple, perfect and progressive tense and explained the features of the different tenses.

As part of our Science topic, living things and their habitats, the children looked at how to classify and group animals. To understand how to formulate specific questions, the children used liquorice allsorts to distinguish between each type of sweet and created questions to identify each sweet according to the properties.

The year 6 children have been out on the field planting a variety of different vegetables in small pots ready to be planted in the larger beds in the poly tunnel A huge thank you to the parents who came to support our regrowth project! Now roll on summer so we can see our hard work pay off!

This years world book day theme was hats so the children explored a range of hats and thought about who they may belong to or what a person may be doing whilst wearing the hat. It was very interesting to see the children’s ideas particularly for the sombrero. Using the hats for inspiration, the children composed their own free verse poem.

Working in pairs, the children described a range of 2D shapes to their partner whilst their partner drew the shape using the information provided. This included the position of each vertice and drawing angles accurately using a protractor. This task definitely helped the children to develop their communication skills and think specifically about the instructions they are providing.

To support the children’s understanding of algebra, the children used cups and counters to solve algebraic equations - this was not only fun but deepened the children’s knowledge.

The year 6 hockey team had a fantastic opportunity to play field hockey against lots of schools across Manchester! In the tournament we reached the finals and we played extremely well against a lot of different schools! A huge well done to Caidie-Leigh, Christian, Alfie, Liam, Mikayla and Mia, you have really done the school proud.

The children have enjoyed playing ‘choose your product’. The children have been competing in pairs and demonstrated so many Mathematical skills.

As part of our World War 2 topic, the children experienced life in an air raid shelter. The children took cover under tables and in a small, confined space to imagine what life was like living in an air raid shelter. The children listened to an air raid siren and Winston Churchill’s speech to gain a better understanding what life was like for people during the war. From this experience, the children wrote a diary entry imagining their first day in an air raid shelter. Finally, the children tea stained their writing to add authenticity to their work.

As part of our topic learning, the children learnt about the blitz and created their own artwork. The children used pastels to create their background and used black card to create silhouettes of buildings. 

PCSO’s visit, by Miss Dobie

Today, the children received a visit from our local PCSO’s to inform and discuss knife crime. The children responded in a very mature way and considered the dangers involved and how to keep themselves safe. The children also had the opportunity to ask any questions, which were very thought provoking and demonstrated how each child is a responsible citizen. 

Safer Internet Fortnight, by Miss Dobie

As part of Safer Internet Fortnight, the children used the Ipad’s to respond to emails focusing on strangers online and cyber bullying. The children recalled the SMART rules to provide appropriate advice on how to stay safe online. The children thought about their own use of the internet and considered ways they could stay safe online but most importantly all children were able to explain what to do if they feel unsure or unsafe whilst on the internet - tell an adult!

Chinese New Year, by Miss Dobie

This week, the children celebrated Chinese New Year by creating blossom tree artwork, which is symbolic of Chinese New Year. The children used watercolours to design their background, felt tip to draw their branches and used finger painting to add blossom to their branches. The children’s work will be showcased in this weeks exhitibition on Friday.

Young Voices 2018, by Miss Dobie

St Margaret Mary’s choir took part in this years Young Voices concert at the Manchester Arena. The children were joined by others schools from in and around Manchester. The children have shown great dedication and commitment in learning a range of songs and actions to perform in front of a live audience. 

The evening was a great success and everyone (including staff) had a fantastic evening and enjoyed being part of the event. Take a look at our photographs and videos from the evening.

Years 5 & 6 have been working hard making different Christmas crafts over the past week to sell at out Christmas Fair.  All money raised will be donated to The Booth Centre, helping those who are homeless in our city.

Today, the choir performed at the Ashgrove House Care Home performing a number of well known Christmas Carols. The children definitely helped to spread joy and Christmas cheer to all the staff and residents and helped everyone to experience a happy and holy Christmas!
